HEALTH REALIZATION SERVICES DIVISION

The Health Realization Services Division (HRSD) is part of the Department of Alcohol & Drug Services (DADS). Its mission is to introduce County staff, service providers, and the community to Health Realization and to provide direct services to clients who receive services in a wide variety of county programs.

HEALTH REALIZATION IN SANTA CLARA COUNTY

DADS introduced Health Realization (HR) in Santa Clara County in 1995. It has since had various levels of exposure in many other areas of the County, especially in the Social Service Agency, Department of Public Health, Department of Corrections, Probation Department, Office of the Clerk of the Board, and the Board of Supervisors' Offices. HR has been implemented in a variety of settings, including schools, jails, substance abuse treatment and prevention, administrations, parenting education, and mental health programs. Many individuals who have participated in the training now apply HR principles to their particular job responsibilities. HR is currently expanding to the Juvenile Probation Department, the Housing Authority of Santa Clara County, and East Side Union High School District.

WHAT IS HEALTH REALIZATION?

HR is a way of teaching a psychological understanding to help people realize their innate psychological health. It is based on fundamental principles that offer a generic, simple explanation about how and why people function as they do. HR is a hopeful and empowering approach that is applicable to prevention, intervention, and treatment within all areas of human service, and it is gaining recognition and use nationally and internationally.

HR's logic is based on respect for, and certainty of, the innate mental health and capacity for well-being inherent in every human being. The goal of HR is to help people realize that this birthright cannot be destroyed by present circumstances or past experiences, and that it is accessible at any moment throughout our lives.

HR involves "insightful understanding" of how one's individual principles of Mind, Thought, and Consciousness create one's individual experience moment to moment. This understanding is the basis for change.

RATIONALE FOR THE HR APPROACH TO ADDICTION

Health Realization is based on three basic principles that explain how human beings create their experience of life. These principles-Mind, Thought, and Consciousness-explain how we all have within ourselves the ability for a wise, healthy flow of thinking. This is accompanied by peaceful, and/or energizing, non-stressful feelings that create a sense of wellbeing. These principles explain how we also have the ability to override this natural flow of wise thinking with self-centered, memory-based thinking that creates stressful feelings and distracts us from our sense of wellbeing.

When we don't know that wellbeing is natural and always available to us, we look outside ourselves for something to calm us down (give peace of mind) and give us a good feeling (enhance wellbeing). Some people find that mood-altering drugs distract them from stressful thinking and help them to feel good. Some people find other things that seem to work for them (i.e., food, exercise, gambling, etc.) While these things may work at first, they usually begin to lose their effects over time. This may set up a pattern of increased use which, for some people, can lead to addiction.

The HR approach is educational and seeks is to help participants understand how the principles relate to their ability to think and feel, and how the way they use these abilities affects their lives. HR education is done within an environment of respect, caring, and personal connection. It is taught in a way that is relative to participants' perceptions and in a way that is simple, yet profound. The goal is to help participants realize the health and wisdom they have within themselves and begin to depend increasingly on that-rather than on their habitual ways of seeking peace of mind and well-being.

HEALTH REALIZATION WITHIN THE ADULT SYSTEM OF CARE

HR is one of the treatment interventions in DADS' System. It is available both in Outpatient Treatment and Prop. 36/SACPA (Substance Abuse and Crime Prevention Act) Aftercare Education. The Aftercare Education service is limited to SACPA participants through the referral process. As part of the adult system of care, Outpatient Treatment is accessible through Gateway at 1-800-488-9919.

Prop. 36/SACPA Aftercare Education

In HR-based Aftercare Education classes, participants explore the dynamics of relapse, triggers, and cravings in terms of their state of mind, and the natural human ability to create stability or instability in our lives. Class activities are designed to help participants:

  • Learn how and why thinking habits create our general lifestyle patterns, and how we have within ourselves access to a state of mind that can free us from these patterns.
  • Learn how insecure habitual thinking can create triggers, cravings, and/or relapse based on the principles of Mind, Thought, and Consciousness.
  • Begin to take insecure habitual thinking less seriously, realizing that it does not have to be acted upon, and that it will pass.
  • Begin to realize the difference between the state of mind that gives us a sense of wellbeing and stability, and the state of mind that gives us insecurity and instability.
  • Gain a more hopeful and healthier outlook about recovery, family, and community.
  • Begin to use wiser thinking or wisdom to create a more stable life and to reach out for support when needed.

Participants will receive information about HR (and other) support resources. Qualified participants must be referred by a SACPA provider or case manager.

HEALTH REALIZATION TRAININGS AND CLASSES

Core Course Training

The Core Course is a 30-hour training. The training is conducted in a casual, relaxed atmosphere, at a pace that is conducive to insightful learning. It involves small- and large-group participation and reflective exercises. Attendees can participate at their own level of comfort. While the agenda is basically the same for all trainings, the format and delivery of the agenda is tailored to each audience. Because the principles are applicable to everyone, anyone can benefit from a deeper understanding of the logic behind HR.

The goal of this training is for participants to gain a deeper understanding of the principles of human psychological functioning and to understand how the logic derived from the principles relates to their lives, relationships, and service. Participants also learn more about human connection and rapport through this different approach to listening and sharing.

The course explains how we can have greater impact with others in support of their psychological health and wellbeing. It also explains why the service provider's health is so important and how it directly affects the quality of the service provided. Most significantly, participants learn that they must acquire their own realizations-rather than relying on the facilitators' understanding. The course also emphasizes simplicity and depth of understanding rather than breadth of information.

Because of the nature of the training, it is important that participation be voluntary and that there is a commitment to the full training. (See Core Course Training Schedule and Registration Information.)

Advanced Classes

There are two additional classes designed for those who have taken the Core Course (or equivalent) and want to explore further the relationship of the principles to their personal and/or professional lives:

Applications Class (Prerequisite: 30-hour Core Course or equivalent)
In this class, participants study the implications of the principles in different situations. This is a drop-in class and requires no registration. However, the class is formatted to explore the full range of the "helping process," so participants will obtain the maximum benefit if they attend on a regular basis. The class meets the fourth Friday of the month, 12:30-3:30 p.m., at 976 Lenzen Avenue, San Jose, Conference Room D. There is no fee.

"Understanding the Principles" Class (Prerequisite: 30-hour Core Course or equivalent)

In this class, a different facilitator each month shares his/her insights and understanding of the principles to enrich participants' understanding. It is also a prerequisite to entering the certification programs. The class meets on the second Friday of each month, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., at the Masonic Temple in San Jose. There is no registration or fee.

All classes are on the second Friday of the month at the Masonic Temple. Each month, a different trainer teaches the classes. Note: There will be no class held in October.
