Workshops Series III
D1. Multisystemic Therapy - Marshall
Swenson, MSW, MBA bio
This presentation will provide participants with an overview of Multisystemic
Therapy (MST). MST is an intensive family- and community-based treatment
that addresses the multiple determinants of serious antisocial behavior
in juvenile offenders. MST addresses the multiple factors known to be
related to delinquency across the key settings, or systems, within which
youths are embedded (e.g., family, peers, school, neighborhood). MST
strives to promote behavior change in the youth's natural environment,
using the strengths of each system to facilitate change.
D2. & D5. Partnering for Collaboration - Constance Burgess
bio
Understanding families with complex multi-system needs requires a useful
way for thinking about the family's behavior. Families experiencing
mental health issues, physical challenges or substance abuse, experience
tremendous stress in their lives for reasons, as providers, we can only
speculate. Our speculations filter out the capability and voice of families.
Because of intended or unintended judgements, families perceive many
things been done to them and their children. This perception is a major
impediment to our ability to develop professional relationships with
families. To effectively partner with families requires a skill set we
all have, but seldom use. The workshop is designed to enhance partnering
techniques in order to increase the family's potential for successful
outcomes.
D3. & D6. How the Revised ASAM Adolescent Criteria Help You Work
with the Whole Teen - David Mee-Lee, MD bio
The Revised Second Edition of the ASAM Patient Placement Criteria for
the Treatment of Substance-Related Disorders (ASAM PPC-2R) was published
April 2001. This workshop will review the new developments in the ASAM
Adolescent Criteria. It will highlight the major changes in the Adolescent
Criteria and explain the rationale and clinical implications for working
with the multidimensional needs of teens. Reference will be made to
adolescent developmental needs using the structure of the ASAM Criteria
assessment dimensions. Participants will learn about revisions, additions
and rationale of the Adolescent Criteria of the Revised Second Edition
of the ASAM Patient Placement Criteria for the Treatment of Substance-Related
Disorders (ASAM PPC-2R) and understand the clinical application of the
Adolescent Criteria and the implications for broadening services to
better meet the holistic needs of youth.
D4. & D7. Teen Years: Difficult Stage,
New Solutions - Barbara Anger-Diaz, PhD; bio
Karin Schlanger, MFT bio
